Momentous Experiences

September 16September 16momentous experiences,lsu football,ronald martin

I am thankful for momentous experiences. I am defining momentous experiences as those experiences that only happen occasionally and when they do are monumental. Sometimes they are the opportunities of a lifetime.

Such an experience happened to me this past Saturday. I've been telling Bebe's cousin, Laura, who has season football tickets with me, that one day I hope to be able to photograph the football players from the sideline at LSU. Unbeknownst to me she registered and won a Taco Bell contest that allowed her and a guest to walk down Victory Hill with the band and stand on the sidelines during warm ups. She invited me to accompany her. Many thanks to Laura and our hostesses Emily and Amanda. It's amazing how BIG those football players are. When I wasn't looking, I took a football to the chest, but I'll have to say, I'm glad it didn't hit my camera, and am glad that one of those guys did not run over me. But, needless to say, I had a ball.

The top photo is of safety Ronald Martin. The top one below is a candid photo of Jake Cliese (13), Rob Bolden (1), Anthony Jennings (10), and Haydon Rettig (11). The bottom photo is of quarterback Zach Mettenberger (8) preparing to throw to receiver Travin Dural (83).

I have posted more photos from the evening in the LSU Football folder on this web page (http://www.zenfolio.com/rttulleyphotography/p96843250/edit).

of a lifetime thrill

i’m watching and observing

getting my long last fill

but if you think

i should tackle this head on

and enter the field of play

those guys are so very big

no definitely not on any day!

Energy

September 15September 15energy;windmill;texas;willow city loop

I am thankful for energy. Without energy, life would be impossible. Our largest source of energy is the sun. Other sources come directly or indirectly from it. How well we are at harnessing available energy determines what we can do.  One source of energy is the wind. A wind turbinel is turned by the wind and electromagnetic moitors produce electricity. Another form of windmill can be used to pump water.

The windmill shown here was on the Willow City Loop in Texas. Windmills in Texas are used mostly to pump water. But that is an important function of converting wind energy to mechanical energy and thus pump water from a well or around the farm. Notice the abundant wildflowers and bluebonnets.

energy

it takes so much energy

to do what needs to be done

energy

it takes so much energy

to get up with the morning sun

kinetic energy is required

to get myself into gear

but it seems i mostly have

only potential energy

because the kinetic kind fails to appear.

My Dog Cupcake

September 14September 14my dog cupcake

I am thankful for my dog Cupcake. I am actually thankful for dogs in general but Cupcake is very special to me. Cupcake was actually my daughter Beth's dog who my son John and his girlfriend at the time picked out for her from the dog pound. She's a mixed golden retriever/chow, maybe. Cupcake seemed to choose me over time so Beth got herself another dog and Cupcake became mine. I have never had such a loving dog before. She likes to return hugs. She is my constant companion and follows me everywhere I go. There is nothing like a faithful companion dog.

I took this photo of Cupcake in my back yard. She laid down in a bed of flowers. I thought it was the perfect setting for her photo.

she’s such a wonderful dog

she makes it easy

to sing her praises in blog

though she follows me around

and sleeps next to my side

in truth i would follow her around

i readily confide.

Beauty

beauty,daylilySeptember 13

I am thankful for beauty. Beauty can mean many different things: it is a sunset, it is a mountain range, it is a beautiful woman. Beauty is a particular esthetic that is hard to describe, but everyone knows what is beautiful to them. Beauty is the goal that a photographer hungers for in a scene. It is that motivation that keeps us searching for an even more beautftul scene than the one before.

I could have used so many different things to represent beauty. But to me flowers are one of the most colorful and beautiful things nature put on this planet for us to enjoy. This is a daylily from my yard taken immediately after a rain shower. I love the colors in this pafrticular flower.

if beauty is in the eye of the beholder

is it a clear or cloudy eye

that determines

if beauty or ugly applies.

i love the story of

beauty and the beast

it is the dream of every person humble

from west to the east

but more often than not

though i may appear snooty

is that it generally happens

that handsome pairs with beauty.

Inspiration

inspiration, lighthouseSeptember 12

I am thankful for inspiration. Inspiration is defined as something that causes, guides, communicates or motivates us. Inspiration can come from other people, from things, or from a divine influence. I sometimes feel inspired from simple things such as waking up to a beautiful sunny day, having time to play a little golf, listening to music, worshipping, looking at art or photography, or simply relaxing contemplation.  I am especially inspired by people that have overcome difficulties. I am inspired by the love of God.

This is a photo of a lighthouse on the California coast between San Francisco and Monterrey that my good friend Larry and I came upon on a drive down Highway 1 to see the Pebble Beach golf course while we were in San Francisco for a Clinical Chemistry meeting. I believe this is the Pigeon Point Lighthouse which is 20 miles south of Half Moon Bay. The lighthouse below is on Lake Buchanan in Texas.

I wrote the following poem in 2001. The second part is based on actual events that happened to a friend of mine from graduate school. It was discovered that she had a brain tumor which required surgery, however, the surgery did not go well and she nearly died. Fortunately, she survived. Because of her disability, she had to give up her career as a research biochemist but took up a career in art. She is doing very well and is very talented.  That is inspiration. See her work at http://www.susantalbothoffmann.com/. In the poem, I pass on what she described to me about her time in intensive care.

lighthouse

i’m tossed about

in my journey

my journey of life

danger looms at every turn

amid the tumult & strife

pridefully steering my own course

i’m captain of my soul

let no one say that i

cannot reach my own goal

though left to the tide

i am but a speck upon the sea

i am helpless

that is my reality

rocks threaten to dash me

as the waves erupt against them

they threaten to crash me against the shore

capture me

beat me

and more

i flirt with danger

and steer for the rocks

but the lighthouse of Your love

illumines the safe path

shows the way to live

shows the way to give

and if i let you steer

You guide the way

to a safe harbor near

she lay in a place

somewhere between death and life

she grasped to hold on to herself

as she struggled in her fight

and she was suddenly in a corridor

showered in a blinding ray of white light

clean and pure she was at peace

in this newfound and wondrous sight

and a voice said

she could return

or she could stay

but her place on earth

would never be the same

she would be a lighthouse

protected forever from harm

her life would be held

in wondrous and loving arms

and likewise

columns of light from her

would emanate around the world

her light would forever be

a safe haven for all to see

i knew her before

and i knew her then

i know her after

my inspirational friend

her life took a detour

on a path she had not before seen

higher up the mountain

she climbed to new heights

where the air is rare and clean

and the lighthouse that guides us

also asks that we

serve too as a lighthouse

for others to see

we are guided by the One

that stands stately on the shore

though with less grandeur

but as noble an intent

we stand to guide others

with our own light

on the journey we have been sent.
