Versatility

versatility;LARC-V;navy;"amphibious vehicle"September 1b

I am thankful for versatility. Versatility is defined as the ability to do multiple things. Experts in a single field are to be admired. But to have knowledge and skills in several different things is a rare but valuable attribute and can contribute to success.

This is a photo of a vehicle I noticed in Gulfport on our recent trip there. It was obviously an amphibious vehicle, in other words, one that could float on water like a boat and then drive on land like an automobile. With some research I found that this is a Navy LARC-V, or Logicstical Amphibious Recovery Vehicle. I am not sure what its particular mission was in this case but I found out that this vehicle was very important in gulf/beach and New Orleans cleanup after Hurricane Katrina. Perhaps the vehicle is not as good as a boat and not as good as a truck, but it is a little of both and goes beyond what either can do separately.

versatility

jack of all trades

master of none

but he was the versatile

master of fun

dancing or partying

sports or games

to enjoy himself

was his aim.

Popcorn

popcornAugust 31

I am thankful for popcorn. It is probably the snack food which I indulge in more than any other. I love popcorn. I sometimes go to movies just so I can have popcorn. I remember as a child when my family visited my grandparents in Franklin, Indiana, my grandmother would pop us up a batch of Indiana popcorn, spread out newspapers, throw the popcorn on it, salt it, and we would chow down. Indiana knows how to grow corn, so that native Indiana popcorn was wonderful.

I know it's mostly air and carbohydrate, it's got fat from the cooking oil, and then there's the salt. But there must be some nutrient value to it. I know it has good fiber content. One recent report found that popcorn contains high amounts of polyphenol antioxidants. So there is some good nutrition in that little kernal. One day I think I'll develop a popcorn slimming diet regiment!

According to Wikipedia, the corn contains some water and oil inside the kernal. When heated, it causes steam to build up inside, gelatinizing the carbohydrate. The kernal eventually explodes through the kernal and the carbohydrate and protein form a puff as it cools. Voila-popcorn! I like some microwave popcorn (Pop Secret Home Style is my favorite) but I especially love Orville Reddenbacker's Gourmet Popping Corn cooked in a stirred popcorn maker.

I took the photo above last night just before I devoured it (well, I had a little help from Bebe). The photo of the cornfield below was taken in Illinois, I believe, several years ago.

i love to watch it pop

i love the rhythm

popop, popop

popcorn sounds just right

but even better than that

is the tasty delight.

Photographing Animals

photographing animals;young racoonAugust 30

I am thankful for being able to photograph animals. I really enjoy the challenge. They generally do not pose, so you must catch them candidly in their habitat. That is what makes it so challenging and rewarding when you get a good shot.

I was playing golf with my friend Frank Martini and his son Paul at Santa Maria Golf Course in Baton Rouge. We were on the third hole when Frank told me about this racoon which he saw in the right side rough. I went over and got several shots of this raccoon, who appeared young to me. He looked at me rather warily and I got this photo using my telephoto lens, just before he scampered away. He was the best memory I have from my first nine golf game, which was rather dismal, except for the scenery and that raccoon. But the company was good and, fortunately, the golf was better on the second nine.

i enjoy shooting animals

but not with a gun

my weapon of choice

is much much more fun

my canon with a long barrel

telephoto lens that is

to zoom in close to the action

get an expression of his

and best of everything

when i finish with the session

he gets to run home safely

i have a photo impression.

Interfaces

interfaces,docks,boatsAugust 29

I am thankful for interfaces. An interface is a surface which forms a common boundary between two bodies. It is where two independent and unrelated systems meet and act or communicate. Of course, the most common use of the word interface has to do with computers. A computer interface allows communication between the computer and a person, a printer, or other device. An example would be a keyboard which allows entry of text, numbers, or commands, or a mouse, which allows multiple functions in commands, selections, or drawing functions.

I think the word interface applies to people. We are all unrelated in many ways and the way we interact or communicate with one another is enhanced by an effective interface. What can this interface be? I think it can be common interests, sympathy, empathy, concern, etc. So if we have a quality interface with others, we can communicate much more effectively.

This is a photo of the marina at Pass Chriastian, Mississippi. I used this photo because docks, piers, or wharfs, which all have very similar meanings, are much akin to an interface between land and sea. A dock is a place where people can load or board boats or the reverse of that. Although it would be possible, can you imagine how much more difficult it would be to load and unload boats without an interface as good as a dock? So therefore, I use the dock photo to represent interfaces.

interface

God looked at the earth and saw

the sea and the sky

similar colors and look

but without connection

He could not deny

what was needed He said to himself

was an interface between the two

a way for them to become connected

so that they would be equal and new

so He invented water vapor

to interface sky and sea

an interface tying the two together

in their own ecology

so the water evaporates

and forms clouds in the sky

the clouds accumulate water

and spill rain back to unify

so the perfect connection

was made in that space

two entities are now tied together

by an interface.

Tune-Ups

tune-ups,turning,mandolin tunersAugust 28

I am thankful for tune-ups. Tune-ups are required to keep things, and yourself, in working order. Without tune-ups, we would quickly begin to run poorly, go off key. Name your metaphor. In any event, after a while of running, tune-ups are required for automobile engines to run smoothly. In string music, a tune-up, actually tuning, is required to keep the strings at the correct pitch after they have drifted. We people often require tune-ups in the form of rest and relaxation, vacation, worship, trips to the dentist, doctor, friend, or counselor. Just a little tweak is all that is sometimes needed to get back in smooth working order.

This is my mandolin showing the head with the tuning mechanisms and knobs.

tune-ups

you can play soulful

or you can play perfectly nice

you can finger the notes accurately

and the rhythm be very precise

but if the your instrument

fails to be in tune

the notes you strike perfectly

will sound as lampoon

so tune-ups are required

for every musician to succeed

securing the correct notes

perfectly timed and perfectly keyed.
