Closure

closure,corksJuly 8

I am thankful for closure. Closure usually refers to when an issue is resolved or "put to bed". The term is often used when differences between people are settled or finally closed and the matter is no longer an issue. It is wonderful when differences between people can be resolved and forgotten.

This is a photo of a bowl of corks I took at a Denham Springs antique shop. I connect them to closure in that a cork is a stopper used to close or seal things such as a bottle of wine. Cork is a natural product that comes from the bark of the cork oak. It has several properties that make it a good wine stopper - it is mostly impermeable, it has good elasticity, and it expands inside the bottle to create a good seal. Cork is also used for bulletin boards and insulation. In addition, it floats in water and is fire retardent. So many uses for such a seemingly simple natural product!

when he yells for me to shut up

and put a cork in it!

Empowerment

I am thankful for empowerment. Empowerment allows us to "grab the bull by the horns" and take charge of our lives.

This is a photo of a little girl's shoes at a wedding that I photographed with my brother Fred. The shoes reminded me of the ruby slippers that Dorothy inherited fromt the Wicked Witch of the East in The Wizard of Oz. These slippers represented power in the movie. As long as Dorothy was alive nobody could take the slippers. And in the end, the slippers allowed Dorothy to return home to Kansas. Interesting that this is the second time I've used a Wizard of Oz reference in this blog (The Brain, May 5). Obviously, that movie made a huge impact on me.

there’s no place like home"

dorothy said as she clicked her heels together

and returned

back to monochrome

dorothy had found

she had the power all along

so she returned back to kansas

a place she would always belong.

Wisdom

wisdom,owlJuly 6

I am thankful for wisdom shown by great people as examples to us all. People of great wisdom make great mentors to us. I don't consider wisdom to be the same as intellect, although one can have both. Intellect is the ability to acquire knowledge, whereas, wisdom is the ability to use intelligence to make the right choices. Perhaps it could be said that wisdom is the practical application of knowledge for positive benefit.

This photo is of an owl decoy, not a real owl, over the waterfall in my pond. I put him there in hopes that he would scare off predatory birds and snakes from killing my koi and goldfish. It didn't work. Perhaps the birds and snakes had wisdom enough not to be fooled. But anyway, owls are supposed to symbolize wisdom. A little internet reserach gave me the history of this: the owl was associated with the Greek Goddess Athena, who represented wisdom, and who had the owl as her symbol.

the boy to the wise man says

"how can you be so wise man

does it grow in you

or are you born that way"

the man smiles

scratches his brow and replies

"wisdom is a state of mind

of the person

that is not wise enough

to know any better".

Family

familyJuly 5

I am thankful for family. Not just immediate, but extended family also.

This is my sister Mary Beth, her daughter Michelle, and Michelle's four children. This photo was taken at my house when Michelle and Mary Beth were visiting recently. There are three generations represented here.

close enough

Independence/Freedom

independence,freedom,fourth of july,fireworksJuly 4

I am thankful for not only independence, but also the freedom that we enjoy in the United States of America. We are far from perfect but we have the best thing going when it comes to our standards, way of life, and the freedoms that we have. If something is not right, we, the people, have the ability to fix it by our vote. Our country has a great system of checks and balances that has done a pretty good job of making sure things are right. So on this Independence Day, I want to express my love for our country.

This is a photo taken on the Navy Pier in Chicago a few years ago during their nightly fireworks display. Fireworks diplays are one of the celebratory things we do to remember our country's independence and our thankfulness for the freedoms that we have. I like this photo because of the silhoettes of the people watching the fireworks. For our country is of the people, by the people, and for the people. The people are what makes our country what it is. It is for the people that we celebrate our country. I took the photo below standing on a ladder underneath the flag flying outside my house today.
