Matting and Framing

April 19

I am thankful for matting and framing because I enjoy framed artwork or photographs with mats. My wife Bebe surprised me with a do-it-yourself mat cutter many years ago and I have seriously enjoyed having it. I now do most of my own matting and framing.

Two critical things in determining the ultimate success of cutting a mat are precise measurements and sharp blades. If either are not up to snuff, then you might as well start over.

The photo above shows me measuring for the mat cut. The first photo below shows the actual cutting of the mat bevel and the final photo shows the artwork being taped onto the mat prior to framing.

a square mat for a round pic

if you have a square mat

to frame a round pic

the mat has to be bigger

if you do the arithmetic

than the diameter of art

or else the art will exceed

the size of the frame

from the very moment you start

and a new mat you will need.
