April 12
I am thankful for live concerts. I love music so I also enjoy live performances. And another thing I have really gotten into is concert photography. The venues that allow me to photograph concerts are mostly small bars or clubs. The lighting is not always very good so it adds a huge challenge to photographing it. I've learned that you need to use a high ISO setting and have a fast lens. My fastest lens is only a 100 mm f2.0, so it is not extremely fast but it is better than my two regular lenses which are f4. Fortunately, my camera has very good resolution and can take relatively ungrainy photos at elevated ISOs. I also have a program called Noiseware Professional, which removes noise from photos taken at high ISOs. I hope I haven't lost you non-technical folks. The bottom line is that it is fun but challenging. I got into this kind of photography primarily because my son John is a musician. I have followed and photographed all his bands from Bug, to Lucid Soule, and now The Lazarus Heart, as well as his side project concerts.
This photo was taken at last Friday's Lindsay Rae Spurlock concert at Chelsea's in Baton Rouge. I have a connection to Lindsay in that she was the lead singer for John's previous band, Lucid Soule. It was a great band (according to a Dad's biased opinion). When that band broke up, Lindsay went solo. She has a gorgeous voice and so much range and is a talented songwriter. She now is living in Los Angeles, so I rarely get to see her in concert any more. She came into town for this concert and asked John to play bass in the band, as she does whenever she is in town or nearby. Also, on lead guitar was Brandon Scott, who was in John's first band, Bug. It was a great concert. I am posting more photos from the concert on this web page. To see them click on All My Photos then click on Concerts, Bands, and under Lindsay Rae Spurlock see the photos with the date 040513, which begin on page 2.
In the photo from left to right: John Tulley (bass), Lindsay Rae Spurlock (keyboard, acoustic guitar, vocals), and Brandon Scott (lead guitar). Hidden behind Brandon is Justin Owens (drums).

to make it as a band
you know you’ve arrived
when you've had roadies rush you
and that you have survived.
