I am thankful for Texas bluebonnets. Three times out of the past twelve years I have made trips to Texas to photograph bluebonnets and Texas wildflowers. Since I went to graduate school for a couple of years at University of Texas at Austin, Bebe and I have been interested in the colorful display every spring along the roadsides, wooded areas, and in the hill country in Texas. Bluebonnets, of course, are our favorites. The bluebonnet, a lupine, is the state flower of Texas. I overheard a local resident saying he wished all the bluebonnets would die because they brought in so many tourists. I'm sure it's inconvenient to the locals, but we out of towners enjoy it immensely. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This photo was taken in the hill country near Llano along a drive called the Willow City Loop. It is a road that circles around farmland, mountain-like terrain, and streams. My sister Mary Beth and I have taken this drive twice now and enjoyed it both times.
bluebonnets
with a bonnet of blue
there’s no other flower
of that particular hue
and such a popularity shower
if i were to write a sonnet
it would include the famous name
the name of bluebonnet
the texas flower of acclaim.

i give you this bluebonnet
i give you this bluebonnet
to show you my love
i want you to hold on it
forever in love
take this ole bluebonnet
and prosper your love
i want us to build on it
a bluebonnet chain of love
bluebonnet
my token to thee
i want us to cherish it
and for it always to be
i want us to die together
this bluebonnet held in our arms
linking us with bluebonnet chains
protecting us from every harm.
