Hills

hills,the bluffs,#18June 20

I am thankful for hills. Even though I have always been a "flatlander", I have always loved rolling hills. To me they are just so beautiful and the perfect place to put a golf course. The presence of hills on a golf course adds another variable in the third demension that has to be accounted for when taking your stance, lining up your shot, and adjusting your swing to the land.

This photo is the eighteenth hole at The Bluffs in St. Francisville, taken near the tee. The course is built on some of the most beautiful tree lined rolling hills anywhere in Louisiana. The eighteenth is a faily short dogleg left par five which runs along the bluff overlooking Thompson Creek to the left and rises uphill all the way to the green. The houses to the right have a gorgeous view on the bluff overlooking the hole and the creek.

the hills are alive

(with apologies to Julie Andrews)

the hills are alive

with the sound of beauty

whispering in your ears

of your heartfelt duty

rise and fall

with the flow of the earth

reminding us evermore

of our place of new birth.

Yeah, I completely identify with what you said, Rick.

Ah yes, those hills :( Growing up in Biloxi on the Miss Gulf Coast, I began playing on "flat" courses, which was fine until I encountered those "hilly" courses upstate. The absolutely worst score I ever carded in my high school golf career was in my very first varsity tournament, at Laurel Country Club in Laurel, MS. Besides hitting my first tee shot in my first tournament out of bounds (sure that was nerves), that course killed me with its hills - uphill, downhill, sidehill lies and elevated greens, all of which were foreign to a "Coast golfer". After that tournament, my Dad took me on trips upstate to let me practice and play on more hilly courses, since I knew that I would encounter many, many more courses in Mississippi and other states during my high school days. It all came together, but after that first tournament at Laurel CC, I was pretty shaky about those "hilly" courses.
