Welcome to the rt tulley photography blogIt features photos, text, and poetry.February 18Perspective
I am thankful for perspective. Perspective in art is defined as converging parallel lines that gives the illusion of distance. A sub-definition is the ability to observe things in relation to their relative importance. I am speaking of the perspective of time rather than distance in this case, although distance is another important factor (the farther away from something you are, the less important it might seem). Perspective of time means that as time goes by, or as we age, we tend to see things with a different viewpoint than before. The perspective of age allows us to look at things with a long-term perspective rather than an immediate perspective. Practically, what this means is that we tend to not "sweat the small stuff" as much as we might have in our younger days.
This photo was taken at University Lake near LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, one foggy morning. The parallel lines of the trees (the comparison of where the trees meet the ground versus the line along the top of the trees) converge as they fade into the distance. This photo aptly reinforces my point of the lines converging in the distance and getting smaller when farther away. It is the same as with many of our daily concerns and problems - they are minimized when we step back to look at them through the perspective of time or distance.
perspective
my perspective is based on many years of experience so if you think it’s about wisdom truth is, it’s more endurance than diligence. © rt tulley February 17Frost
I am thankful for frost. Not that I love cold weather, however, frost gives items an interesting icy look to them that adds interest to the mundane. And it makes me look foreward to spring.
The ground was lightly covered with spots of frost the day I took this photo in my front yard. I used my Canon 100 mm f2.8 macro lens.
jack frost
jack frost visited us last night oh what an impish sprite he painted the windows and clovers and all sorts of other things but chose to use only silver and white which he sprinkled randomly not too handily he could have used a few colors if he wanted to make it right if he wanted a beautiful sight but i’m told he ran out of red and orange and yellow after he painted the leaves now all that is left are two shades of mellow. © rt tulley February 16Penitence
I am thankful for penitence, those times when you confess your sins and misdeads and ask for forgiveness. Penitence allows us to figuratively, or actually, erase our slates and begin again. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is the great day of penitence which leads up to 40 days of self sacrifice and fasting culminating in Easter.
Many churches put crosses with ash on foreheads as a sign of penitence. At my church, cares, sins, and worries are written on notecards and then burned collectively to symbolize the forgiveness of our sins by the ultimate sacrifice on the cross.
This photo was taken after my friend Sylvia went to her church on Ash Wednesday and was marked with a cross with ashes on her forehead. She was side lit by natural window light. Editing and slight enhancement of the cross was performed in Photoshop.

February 15Resourcefulness
I am thankful for resourcefulness-that indicator of the human spirit that will not let a lack of material or items stop them. People have an amazing capacity for inventing new ways to do things in spite of the lack of resources.
I was going to Ash Wednesday services at my church last evening and pulled into the parking lot and noticed these two kids playing basketball at the apartment next door and grabbed my camera. They were using the hole in the awning over the door as a basketball goal. A lack of a basketball goal and court did not stop them! So even children can be resourceful-maybe even more so than adults.
resourcefulness
the most important item that people can have for themselves should be in large supply and plentiful upon their shelves to fix broken things patch any kind of hole tie down loose items make broken items whole so what is this thing that can be useful in any landscape when one needs to be resourceful it’s the versatile and useful duct tape. © rt tulley February 14Valentine's Day
I am thankful for Valentine's Day. I know, it's a holiday for retailers to make money. But anytime you can have an excuse to express love and affection for another person, it is an excuse well worth the time and money spent. Children love Valentine's Day. I remember decorating shoe boxes and putting a slit in the top to collect everybody's Valentine's Day cards to you. It was always exciting to see if that girl you had a secret crush on would send you a very special card. You know the few that came in a box of super hero cards that were bigger and better than the rest.
I was on my way to choir practice on Ash Wednesday prior to the Ash Wednesday service at my church when I passed this decorated door for the pre-school they have at my church. I had my camera and had been trying to think of a Valentine's Day photo, so why not snap this? It's kind of cute in its own way.
