Welcome to the rt tulley photography blogIt features photos, text, and poetry.March 10Persistence
I am thankful for persistence. It is that quality that keeps us going even in the most dismal and improbable circumstances for success. I will have to say it may not be one of those charactistics that I exhibit very often, as I often give up too soon. However, I admire it so much in others. Like in my friend and fellow co-worker who tried to get into medical school umpteen times unseccessfully, but never gave up and never stopped trying. He finally made it..
This photo is of a vine growing through, between, and around a chain link fence. Even though it has been cut, you can see by the its thickness that it never gave up.
persistence
i give up i said in exasperation how can i ever have success in so much desperation how many attempts does it take you to succeed? a wise man asked of me i said i don’t know indeed he answered wisely you must learn to plant the seeds for success takes as many attempts as many times as it needs. © rt tulley
March 9Local Diners
I am thankful for local diners, especially the one pictured here, Louie's Cafe in Baton Rouge near LSU on State Street. Louie's is a 24 hour diner which has been in operation since 1941. The chef dressed in red is Frenchie; the one in the foreground is Fred, I think. Frenchie actually trained at Le Cordon Bleu in France. I love to sit on the barstool where there is maximum interaction with Frenchie, who is very talkative and entertaining. This eatery has wonderful omelets and hash browns beyond compare. Maybe not so much for heart healthy, although they do have veggie omelets! My good friend Larry Broussard goes to Louie's nearly before every LSU home football game and sometimes for basketball. He enjoys the hamburger with sprouts. I like the Mitchell omelet and the Veggie Omelet. Of course, we both love the hash browns.
louie’s
louie’s a baton rouge tradition small and so very quaint the locals gather for talk for food there’s no complaint the chef frenchie knows food frenchie knows football frenchie has an opinion on just about any call one time i photographed him he must have felt some kind of strife or was joking with me as he posed with a threatening knife. © rt tulley
March 8The Beach
I am thankful for the beach. Many people enjoy swimming and sunbathing but I, of course, being a photographer love the beach for the photo opportunities.
This photo was taken on a recent visit to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. This is our friend Sylvia, who has consented to allow me to use her as a photo subject often. Thank you, Sylvia!
the beach
of many things i love i love the beach the white seashore the water within reach the warmth of summer so pretty the sand the cyclical tumbling waves the sights never bland i love making photographic art at the beach for hours sunrise sunset in between even in summer showers but a few things keep me from going in the cold and sand prevent me from the swim sand in the shoes and in the bed sand everywhere you've seen and there’s that other thing burning eyes from the saline fear from sharks the seaweed and oil jelly fish stings impede all the fun to foil. © rt tulley
March 7Morning Newspaper
I am thankful for my morning nrewspaper. My dogs and I begin the early morning routine by going for a walk and then picking up the newspaper, which is hopefully in my front yard. My entire day is disrupted should there be no paper when I expect one. My morning nrewspaper is attached Pavlovianesquely with my morning coffee. On days when the paper does not arrive by our daily morning walk, my entire day begins in a dysfunctional manner. I frantically call the help line to get delivery reinstated and remain out of sync until I hear the plop of the thrown newspaper into the driveway.
I first became interested in morning newspapers when I was in the fifth grade in Edinburg, Indiana and I took on a paper route. It was hard work but taught me many lessons, such as trifolding the newspaper tightly and rubber banding it, packing the bag securely, being able to navigate the bicycle with the heavy bag on your back, and finally, learning the proper wrist snap required for accurate throwing of newspapers. And on Sundays, hoping that your father would drive you on your route because of the heftiness of Sunday papers, especially when it was cold and snowy.
Now, the morning newspaper is the only daily newspaper in Baton Rouge, but even if there was an afternoon paper, I would continue to get the morning one. The morning paper is the ONLY paper!
morning newspaper
i can’t wait to get my morning newspaper i make a beeline to pick it up read the latest caper catch up on robberies to see the wars fought how many people were murdered and all that what naught i know I must be a bludgeon for asking for such punishment but i can’t seem to leave it alone in my book it’s money well spent. © rt tulley
March 6Collaboration
I am thankful for collaboration. Without it, we would always be lone wolfs (no pun intended, Anne-see below), working in isolation and always alone. Sometimes collaboration makes things more difficult, but the time spent overcoming differences makes the end product so much better than simply the sum of the individual parts. Other synonyms of collaboration are partnership and teamwork, two of my very favorite words.
Pictured above are myself and Anne Wolfe, a nurse, a very talented artist, and friend of our family. She is married to Hawley Wolfe, the pastor of our church. Anne and I have been collaborating on a new children's book for the past several months. Previously, I had done page design for a book she wrote and illustrated as a gift to her son-in-law and another she wrote about an experience my family had with a snake during Hurricane Isaac. Working on those books bonded our working relationship and we decided to do further publishing projects together. As shown in the photo, we are discussing the page design and final illustrations for the children's book. In spite of what I said in the first paragraph about the difficulties of collaboration, working with Anne has never been difficult - it has been fun, productive, and sometimes "quirky"- Anne's desired interpretation of our work.
collaboration
i am a loner i do have to admit i enjoy working alone maybe i’m a misfit but sometimes i like to be part of a team or a partnership that’s good for self esteem for the result of two is much more than double the results of one alone in a bubble so no more a lone wolf will i continue to be working together now for quirky results to see. ©rt tulley |
