Welcome to the rt tulley photography blogIt features photos, text, and poetry.December 25Christmas
I am thankful for Christmas. As I said before, Christmas is my favorite holiday, and probably yours too. It's such a special time. But it all revolves around Jesus' birth. A birth of a baby is always a very special time. It brings to mind such happiness and unparalleled love. And this one was even more special.
This is a manger scene I took a few years ago. It's interesting because of the sign in front. If you can't read it, it says "Looking for Happiness? Do Something Nice for Someone." How true. It certainly captures the spirit of Christmas.
Above is a Christmas candle at our house. And, fiinally, the last photo is our Christmas tree from 2011 that I took some artistic liberties with using Photoshop.
Christmas
if i can just get through Christmas with enough money this year spending patterns have taken a toll and brought me plenty of fear credit cards are maxed out so there’s no more to be had scrimp a little on extras and essentials next paycheck will make me glad i’ve got to get to the mall soon shopping stress and shuttle shame you certainly better watch out anyone that gets in my way so you’d better not cry and you’d better not shout for i’m coming through the line that’s what it’s all about but on Christmas day after all the pushes and shoves i will forget all the chaos and remember only the love the newborn baby makes us forget all the tears and fear and we will try to be a little better this time next year. © rt tulley MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!December 24Chemistry/Research
I am thankful for chemistry and research. I don't know what it is about chemistry but i took a liking to it in high school and that has not changed after a few years of practicing the craft. Research goes along with chemistry in my mind because I enjoy doing chemistry research. It's all about learning new things and/or creating new things such as methods of analysis. As you know, I've gone back to work and am enjoying getting back to grassroots chemistry. I also enjoy doing background research in search of interesting and rare facts when I write things like this blog. For example, did you know that the inventor of the erlenmeyer flask, which is a container with a wide bottom which narrows up to a cylindrical neck, was a German chemist named Emil Erlenmeyer. His Ph.D. dissertation was entitled "On the manufacture of the artificial manure known as superphosphate.” So when you see an erlenmeyer flask from now on you are certain to think of manure.
This is a photo I took at work yesterday of some solutions in volumetric flasks ( I just wish I had been able to photograph erlenmeyer flasks!). There's a certain wrisk action that works perfectly for mixing these solutions in these flasks. It's a special technique required for thorough mixing. It is a real art! Chemistry is maybe 50% art and 50% science. Maybe that's why I like it so much.
chemistry
once there were two nobel chemistry laureates who to each other were married they each stated with pride their life was both hectic and harried but it must be said of them through intrigue and mystery nobody could say that anyone had better chemistry. © rt tulley December 23Cameras/Photography
I am thankful for cameras and photography. I don't really know what I would do without a camera, without photography. They seem so integral to me that I am not sure how I would survive without them. Maybe I'd learn to paint, draw, or something like that. It is my way of recording the things that I like. That is how this blog came into being.
I have developed a habit of photographing into a mirror to get a photo of my camera. It's my version of a "selfy" I guess. This is my Canon and me. I was trying for a serious look.

alone and forsaken by many she was a maiden of untold beauty he was a photographer by trade photographs his self appointed duty
he said “i have got to shoot you” if it’s the very last thing that i do” she shook her head and said “only at the moment that i am dead for i am not photogenic nobody has a good photo produced for i am a terrible subject no one has from me a good pic induced”
“but you have never had one such as i” the photographer said with pride “i am the very best there ever was about this i have never lied i will give you whatever you want if i fail to succeed just let me shoot you for 30 minutes that will be all that i will need”
she said it was ok with a smirk and agreed to his crazy demand he asked “but if i succeed in making you look beautiful?” she replied “i will promise to you my hand”
she modeled for him while he snapped away then brought with him a single photo the very next day she looked at it and broke down it showed her beauty through and through so they walked down the aisle together for the pic had depicted her true. © rt tulley December 22Family Gatherings
I am thankful for family gatherings. Family is wonderful. Family is our fortress against the storm. But you gotta take the bad with the good, as they say. It can sometimes be very hectic. But what would we do without family! (Maybe a little more tranquility? haha). I wouldn't have it any other way.
The photo was taken at City Park Lake of this couple and the ducks and geese. It reminded me of the sometimes disarrayed gathering of our relatives. Even though you can tell everything was helter skelter, this couple and their two children (out of photo) were having a blast with the ducks.
family gatherings
well now’s your chance your chance to get far away the family is riding into town to visit and play uncle ralph will yodel a tune aunt jean will cook up a gumbo the kids and grandkids will run some will watch the movie dumbo little ralph will get gum in his hair and joselyn will be screaming outside she may run into a spider web while playing seek and hide katy lynn will cry again for some reason little joe will track in dog poo we’ll spin a yarn or two sit down to dinner and chew family gatherings can’t live with them can’t live without them but seems every year about this time we’ll experience another crazy gem well i guess i’ll pull up a chair and sit and spin a yarn of my own for without our family gatherings each of us would simply be all alone. © rt tulley
December 21The Blues
I am thankful for the blues. Like many unpleasant things, sometimes it takes hard times to make us appreciate the good times and to strive for a better place. One of my favorite clips from one of my favorite movies Adventures in Babysitting is "to sing the blues you've got to live the blues." How true. Sometimes it takes hard times for the creative juices to flow in people. Broken hearted love songs. Tear-jerk movies. Teenage car crash songs. Unrequited love. They all have the blues in common.
I saw this matrix light blue pansy with water droplets recently at a nursery. The blue color and the water droplets, representing tears to me, caught my eye. I thought it would be good for the blues theme. Below is a street musician named Leroy who my son and his band invited to open for them at the Spanish Moon a few years ago. Leroy was simply amazing.
the blues
i was walking down the street when a stranger i happened to meet he had dirty blond hair a pencil was stuck in there he had a guitar case in his hand
he said he would sing me the blues as he spoke through thickened fumes of booze he pulled out a toy guitar and a little tip jar and proceeded to play
he sang “i got da blues so bad today ‘cause ever time i begin to play people laugh and dey walk away da da dada dada da da da da dada dada da da”
i began to laugh and walk away i began to sneer at his play but then i listened and i knew all that he had been through no toy guitar no tiny tip jar could cover his blues and that was the real news
so i put a twenty in his jar as i proceeded toward my car the blues bite down to the soul the blues dig you into a big hole that’s hard to climb out that’s hard to look up to sing the blues you’ve got to live the blues and i knew da da dada dada da da da da dada dada da da. © rt tulley
