Games

games, pool table, cypress bend resortAugust 2

I am thankful for games. Included in this would be my favorite game, golf. But I like a lot of diffferent games, especially sports. Not so much computer games and not so much board games (except Monopoly, Chess, Backgammon, Clue, and the ulitmate: Scrabble). But pictured here is a pool table. Playing pool is fun for me, although I'm not very good at it. Come to think of it, I'm not very good at golf either. But that doesn't make them any less fun. Well, a little improvement might make them more fun! Anyway, it's fun to play around at games when the competitive jiuces are not flowing in excess. A little competition is fun but if you overdo it, the fun is gone, unless you are cutthroat and want to stomp everybody you play. I know you've met people like that. I sure have. But gosh. It's supposed to be for fun, right?

This is a photo of the pool table at the Cypress Bend Resort in Many, Louisiana. It is one of the prettiest golf courses you will find and also one of the nicest resorts you will find. Beautiful, elegant, and service oriented. A little game of pool will top off all the fun!

games

don’t go playing games

when you know that i know

don’t go telling me lies

it’s only a false show

so why must you persist

trying to prove your point

to continue with this charade

will only disappoint.

your game

and my game

they aren’t the same

for when you play

and i play

nearly every day

you play for keeps

i am on the cheap

your play makes me weep

so where’s the fun

it feels like i’ve been shot by a gun

and i’m done.

Hearts

hearts,heart shaped rockAugust 1

I am thankful for hearts, in the literal sense, and in the figurative sense. In other words, the organ that pumps our life's blood through our bodies enabling life, and the word used to describe a loving connection between people. Two life giving things.

This photo is of a heart shaped rock that my family found in the Merced River in Yosemite National Park. I like heart shaped things so I had to photograph it. Perhaps one could extend the metaphor and say that true love is as solid as a rock (apologies to Paul Simon and his Loves Me Like a Rock song), if that's not too corny.

I wrote the following poem ages ago seems like. I decided to resurrect it from my files just because the title fit today's blog topic.

hearts again

took so long

to repair my broken heart

just getting over you

learning to be apart

but throughout that time

i never did forget

still cared for you

and remembered my debt

for i owed you

much more than i could repay

what you gave of yourself

still remains today

but seeing you again

renews the memories

from those days back then

time repeating itself

it hearts again.

its hearts again

love on the mend

burning fire for you

hunger and desire for you

hearts again

will ever be true.

hurt and hope often run together

along that dusty old road and then

we sometimes have to carry

our hearts around the next bend

but when at last we make that turn

we find love and then

its hearts again.

Originality

originality, ground cover with all green leaves and a few yellowJuly 31

I am thankful for originality. It's nice that we are different from each other and even nicer when someone walks to the beat of his own drum in spite of others (well, as long as it's not too much out there-although people like that are interesting). Life would indeed be boring if we were all just alike. It's those people that think and act differently from others that allows for new discoveries, inventions, novels, music, etc.

This is a photo of some wet ground cover that I saw one day at LSU. I was struck by the fact that all the branches had green leaves except for a solitary branch, which sported yellow. They definitely stood out.

original

you’re an original

i heard someone say

to an old man

one gentle fall day

he took off his glasses

and looked rather bold

when he said this

yes, they broke the mold

after they pieced me together

from some different parts

a used newspaper, a ragged stick

supplies from the arts

a little glue

to hold it together

a tack or two

and then a white feather

which they stuck at the top

of my head

to let me go against the wind

i’ve heard it said

but at the end of the day

the parts are rather plain

just pieced in a unique way

then expressed and maintained.

Steeples

steeples, st. bernardJuly 30

I am thankful for steeples. Steeples are associated with churches and to me there is something sacred about churches. Not in the don't touch and stay away kind of sacred but more in the vein of shelter, a place to go for consolation and renewal. Steeples may have originated as part of castles and related to warfare but now they are mostly affiliated with churches. They symbolically reach to the heavens. There are generally three parts, the belfry, housing bells, the lantern area for lights, and the spire, the pinnacle, which indeed points heavenward. The spire on this church is a cross.

These are the twin steeples of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, taken through a windor on the second floor of the antigue shop next door. The church was originally built in 1933-4 from bricks made in Breaux Bridge's brick factory. I think the bricks are lovely. The architecture is said to be French Romanesque, a medieva- European-style containing semicircular arches.

a belfry

a lantern

and a spire

the parts  of what

we call a steeple

reaching skyward

it stands to inspire

the belfry

houses the chimes

which make a joyful sound

of praise to god

the lantern

lights our paths

along the troublesome

and wicked ground

the spire

points the way

heavenward in our journey

and where to direct our voices

when we pray.

Lighting

lightingJuly 29

I am thankful for artificial lighting. Without lighting, our day would just be day and our nights would be night, if you know what I mean. Imagine no lights anywhere, and you see how difficult things would be. All you have to do is experience a hurricane and find how much we rely on artificial lighting, as well as electricity.

This is a photo of a multitude of lighting sources, taken in a shop in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. I liked the color of the lamp and its reflection in the mirror. Also on the table you can see several candles and a wall mounted lamp on the right.

lighting

a candle or a flame

a flashlight

an electric lamp

different abilities but still

they are lighting just the same

flickering or burning bright

different lamps

serve to show the way

serve to give us light..
