Welcome to the rt tulley photography blogIt features photos, text, and poetry.August 7Photo Ops
I am thankful for photo ops. As a photographer who lives and dies for photo ops, you would expect nothing less of me. There are zillions of photo ops out there. It's just having the mind's eye, the vision, the ability to translate what you are seeing into media, and the opportunities. Perhaps one of the greatest songs about photography is Kodachrome by Paul Simon:
"You give us those nice bright colors Paul Simon 1973
This is a candid photo that I caught at a wedding that my brother and I shot together. I just happened to be lucky enough to snap the camera as these bridesmaids were blowing kisses so the man with the camera phone could get their picture. It is one of my most prized photos just because of its humor and because it was a spur of the minute thing. I had no part in the planning but snapped the photo when the opportunity arose.

I am thankful for the sun. Without the sun or a similar energy source, life as we know it would not be possible. That to me is a great reason to be thankful for it. But beyond that, the sun is what creates the most wonderful lighting and atmospheric effects such as sunrises and sunsets. The sun brings warmth to our planet. It is rather amazing that the amount of light and heat from the sun is perfect for sustaining life on our planet.
This is a photo of the sun sinking low in the horizon through the trees at Lake Martin near Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Lake Martin is very beautiful and also serves as a wildlife and bird sanctuary.

August 5Air Conditioners
I am thankful for air conditioners. An air conditioner is one of those things that we take for granted until we don't have one or until it breaks. That is what happened to us on Friday night-our main air conditioner went out. The fan was running but it was not cooling. I can't imagine how I lived for a year in an un-air conditioned room while I was a student at LSU. But I guess it's what we get used to.
Here's a funny story about my dad and the Tulley family. It was during one of the hurricanes that blasted Baton Rouge in the 1960s, I think it was either Hilda or Betsy. Our electricity, and thus, our air conditioner, had been knocked out by the storm and the Tulleys were very hot and miserable. My dad got this excited look on his face like he had proudly just thought of the most ingenious thing and ran outside to the storeroom by the carport. He came inside lugging an old fan that we had had since before we moved to Baton Rouge, but of course, which we had not since had to use because we had central AC. He plugged the fan in, and switched on the On switch. When nothing happened, we all realized at the same time that it was not going to work because there was no electricity. We all laughed, including dad. For years after that, whenever the electricity went out, we chided dad to get the fan!
The photo above is the portable replacement air conditioner that Bebe and I put in our bedroom Friday night so we could make it through until Saturday morning. Below is Tony of Total Comfort Heating and Air working on our unit, which he fixed very rapidly. He said I could use his photo here. Turns out it was a bad capacitor. Here's a plug for Total Comfort: I've used them multiple times and they always do a great job. Even when other companies couldn't make it work, they always have. PUN ALERT: I am now writing this blog in total comfort.

I am thankful for rainbows. As a chemist I know that rainbows are just the result of differential diffraction of light by wavelength which gives us the beautiful rainbow of colors. But they are pretty, no matter what they come from. I still remember the little acronym mnemonic for the order of colors: Roy G. Biv, for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. I just found out there is a song by They Might Be Giants called Roy G. Biv. Part of the lyrics are "Roy G. Biv is a colorful man; and he proudly stands at the rainbow's end." Besides being pretty, rainbows are God's promise to us.
This is a photo of the 18th green at Cypress Bend Resort being watered by the sprinkler. I liked the way the water from the sprinkler made a rainbow. This is my poem about Roy G. Biv:

do not think that i could live without my friend roy g. biv he paints the sky all aglow the colors of the rainbow. © rt tulley
August 3Portholes
I am thankful for portholes. A porthole is usually a round window in a ship or submarine which can be opened but when closed is sealed to the outside. They are generally encased inside a thick metal frame. A porthole has come to mean any kind of round window as seen in cars, armored trucks, airplanes, or spacecraft. Portholes allow light and air to come in. They are a "window to the outside" which can be comforting if you are couped up inside in a small place. Portholes allow us to see our surroundings and breathe the fresh air outside.
This is a porthole type window, without the metal frame, which I found in the lodge at the Cypress Bend Resort near Many, Louisiana. Outside the window is the 18th green of the golf course. Because it was dark inside and very light outside, I superimposed three photos at different exposures and processed them with Photomatix and Photoshop to bring out the inner details without overexposing the outside. Although it is not technically a porthole, it reminds me of one and it allowed me to see the wonderful outside world of the golf course while I was couped up inside.
portholes
give me an ocean to ride upon give me a ship to carry me home let me float with the waves as i upon the seas do roam give me a soft bunk and pillow to rest my weary bones upon give me appetizing food the entire voyage long but most of all give me portholes through which i can clearly gaze see the magnificent beauty of this earth and sing to her wondrous praise. © rt tulley |
