Welcome to the rt tulley photography blogIt features photos, text, and poetry.August 22Water Fountains
I am thankful for water fountains. I enjoy most water features including fountains and waterfalls. They look nice and the sound of of water falling is very soothing.
This is a photo of the Baton Rouge River Center's water fountain and the old state capitol in the background. This photograph was taken a couple of years ago but I just processed it today. Unfortunately, at least in my opinion, this water feature, which included a stream which tumbled down a hill into this water fountain, is no longer there. It was ripped out and replaced with a grassy area. I'm not sure exactly why they did that but I think it might be so that people can use it as grounds to listen to music concerts. I'll try to reserve my negativity until I see exactly what their plans are.
water fountains
water fountains are calming and they are so beautiful to look at but when you’re hot and dry you prefer a drinking fountain to that. © rt tulley
August 21Organization
I am thankful for organization. People who are organized are to be admired. They organize their lives like they organize their closets: fastidiously. I wish I was more organized. I guess I have my moments but I'm not a particularly organized individual. Now, my wife Bebe is the epitome of organization. The accountant in her is very fastidious. My daughter Beth gets her organizational skills from her mom. When she was small, I played a game with her: she would arrange poker chips in order with all the blues together, the reds together and the whites together, in order, blue, red, then white. I would take the chips and mix the colors so there were other colored chips interspersed with the particular colors. It used to drive her batty. She couldn't let it be. She had to rearrange them in "proper" order. I know, it was very cruel of me but I got some good laughs out of it. So, I suppose you can tell who the organized people in my family are. John, on the other hand, is a chip off the old block. Just so you know, people like John and I need people like Bebe and Beth in our lives or our lives would fall into disarray.
This is a photo of Bebe's paint rack with all the colors neatly arranged. How else would you expect her paints to be arranged! Now I wonder what would happen if I put a few blues in with the golds and a yellow or two by the blue? Hmm.
i am a very organized person
i am a very organized person i do like to have control of my life i place my socks on the floor near the bed i don’t know why it fails to please the wife shoes go by the door shirts between the door and the bath and pants closer to the toilet which brings even more wifely wrath but i am organized like her only in a little different way i know where everything is (or i did until she cleaned up today). © rt tulley
August 20Lawn Mowing
I am thankful for lawn mowing. I know, lawn mowing is generally not thought of as a popular pasttime. It is work and it is a repeating chore, generally the pairing of those two things results in something most people don't enjoy. Weekly without fail around here. But to me, mowing the lawn is a stress reliever. It is a mindless and a not-too-demanding activity and does not require a great deal of precision. Therefore, it gives me a lot of time to think. I have had many of my ideas arrive during lawn mowing time. So I actually enjoy mowing the lawn.
This is a photo of my lawn mower as I stopped to snap the photo during last Saturday's mowing time. I have a new Husqvarna 22 inch self propelled mower with a Honda engine. My experience with this and my last mower (which was stolen out of my carport), both of which had Honda engines, is that they start first pull every time. The self propelled feature is one that I have come to enjoy because it makes pushing so much easier.
lawn mowing
mowing the lawn an expression of art gliding clockwise one pass spiraling from the start an abrupt turn puts you on a counter clockwise pathway as you encounter fallen leaves attempting far not to stray a baseball loving man will carve out diamonds in grass where the goal of home is evident in the paths cut a smiley face in the face of the lawn or make diagonal cuts or other objects drawn lawn mowing is no chore it in fact is a lot of fun but all your beautiful handiwork is cut away when you’re done. © rt tulley
August 19Resilience
I am thankful for the resilience shown by those who have overcome handicaps, limitations, circumstances, or fate to rise above that limitation. It can be truly inspirational. I see this trait in so many people that I admire.
From my internet research, I believe this is a laughing gull. I spied it on the Gulfport beach. It was missing a foot, possibly having lost it to some large fish or predator bird. It didn't seem to slow this one down very much. It held its own and got around just as well as the others. It goes to show you that you don't have to be human to show resilence.
resilience
Lord, please teach me the quality of resilience to be able to adapt to circumstance to faithfully shine with brilliance to rise above all limitations that bind and handicap us to use those trials as motivation and live life with a purpose. © rt tulley August 18Science
I am thankful for science. I find science very intellectually stimulating. It is fun to find out how things work. It is fun to do research and discover new things. A lot of people are naturally skeptical and afraid of science but I believe that science could hold answers to many of the problems we have in modern day life. People see modern warfare technology, atomic bombs, depleted ozone layer and blame science. Those may all be true but I also see things like near miraculous medical cures and treatments, modern laboratory diagnosis of disease, food technology, and many more things. I believe that God gave us science to do good, not to do bad. How we use it is up to us.
This is a photo of one of my biotechnology students at LSU AgCenter with a vial of a transfected bacteria. He had transfered a gene called green fluorescent protein gene into E. coli bacteria so that the gene could then manufacture green fluorescent protein which fluoresces under ultaviolet light, as he is demonstrating. The GFR gene originally came from a jellyfish.
in science
in science we can learn what makes life and so how cells divide and multiply and how the plants grow in science we are blessed with healing powers great in science we can travel across the void of space but science has not brought heaven or taught how to live together well for when two or more human beings are gathered the results can be a living hell. © rt tulley |
