I am thankful for writing. This may not be true for everyone, but I think writing is my most natural mode of communication and creativity. Verbally, I tend to get all tongue-tied and don't have the confidence to deliver a soliloquy. But with writing, I just start and it flows. I suppose with speaking, it is difficult to go back and edit but with writing, editing is so easily done with computers that there are plenty of opportunities to go back and correct your mistakes or try to make clearer those things which were not so clearly expressed initially. There are many opportunities to use the eraser!
As I mentioned in yesterday's Blog, I attended the Louisiana Book Festival in downtown Baton Rouge on Saturday. It was a lot of fun for me to talk to the exhibtors, many of whom were self published authors. There are many people with great creativity in the publishing arena. These people were so inspirational: children's story authors and illustrators, authors of novels, authors of inspirational and funny books, and biographical books. Writing is what makes all this possible.
Pictured in today's blog is one of the authors, Stephanie Judice. She is an English teacher from New Iberia who has written two fantasy books for teens, The Saga of the Setti (Rising, Resistance). She explained how teaching youth is very helpful in learning about the way they speak to each other and the little sayings and nuances of teens. In the photo, she is autographing her books for my daughter Beth. Sorry about the stray hairs in the photo: the wind was blowing pretty strongly. words spoken
words spoken
fall out of an unrehearsed mouth
scrambled and jumbled
they zoom out and turn toward the south
those few words
could cause me very very much harm
gotta do a little damage control
preserve my reputation for charm
damage control arrived quickly
to do their undercover work
try to suck back those words
before they think that i’m a jerk
they turn on their machine
and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks
trying to pull those words back
but this time the words must have stuck
for damage control just shakes their heads
and say it is unrecoverable junk
they pack up and back up
after putting their machine in the trunk
so i might as well admit
the damage has been done
i just wish speaking was editable
like the words of this poetic fun.
