Doggie Rides

doggie ridesJanuary 24

I am thankful for doggie rides; ie., taking your dog for a ride in the car. This is my dog Cupcake, a mixed golden retriever/chow and the sweetest and most loving dog you could ever imagine. I love it when she gets so excited about going for a ride in the car. She's so smart, she knows how to open the window by pushing her paw on the power window switch. I got this photo through the right side rear view mirror while waiting at a stop light as she looked out the window.

my dog cupcake

she’s the smartest hound

she opens doors

and rolls windows down

she knows what i say

which is great for a pup

i just wish she would close doors

and put windows back up.

Ducks in the Rain

ducks in the rainJanuary 23

I am thankful for ducks in the rain. My daughter and I were driving around City Park Lake (the same day as the photo of the I-10 overpass in the rain as seen on the January 22nd blog), and found these ducks. They were very interesting to watch in the rain. Beth asked me why it didn't seem like they minded the rain, and I said it was because they naturally love water. But as I watched them carefully, they weren't acting quite as free as when the weather was clear. In fact, the rain was nearly freezing cold and that may have been the reason why. In any regard, I enjoyed watching them and I think the blurriness contributed a mood to this photo, which was taken through the wet front windshield of my car.

so you say it’s raining

like cats and dogs today

but I have proof

it’s raining ducks i say!

Rain

Rain under the overpassJanuary 22

I am thankful for rain. It imparts a romatic or mysterious mood on everything outdoors. The smell, the sound, the feel of rain are all significant sensory stimulants which make rain special. Louisiana is no stranger to rain. Sometimes we get WAY too much, though. The last two weeks here in Baton Rouge we've gotten record amounts.

My daughter, Beth, and I were driving around City Park Lake looking for rain photo ops when she pointed out this one to me. So here it is, rain coming down around the I-10 overpass bridge.

louisiana rain

they say

the rain in spain

is mainly on the plain

that may be true there

but in louisiana

it rains everywhere

even in our deserts

of which we have none

except in desert simulated exhibits

in zoos just for fun

louisiana rain

is only a smidgeon more wet

with a slightly more saturated air

than on a humid day you get.

Fog

trees in fogJanuary 21

I am thankful for the mysterious mood that fog imparts on landscapes. I was driving a few blocks from my house when I saw these pine trees in the fog. I knew exactly the shot I wanted to take but didn't have my camera with me so I drove home, got it, and returned to make this shot with my 200 mm lens. The fog is not extremely noticeable, however, it still makes the photo slightly hazy. I like the effect.

fog

fog is

hazy chill and wet

fog is

eerie as you can get

fog is

a mood to bear

fog is

an impediment

to get there

fog is

ever romantic

fog is

sometimes antic

fog is

always mysterious

fog is

cloaked and adventurous

fog is

the world as I see it

fog is

my brain a little bit.

Dreams

cinderellaJanuary 20

I am thankful for dreams. Not the kind you have while you're asleep (although I like some of those and I'm sure they are beneficial to our psyches), but the ones in which you see possible futures and then strive to those goals. These dreams are one of the chief reasons we retain our passion for life. Dreams keep us from getting stuck in a rut, as long as we take action into moving toward those dreams. Even if the carriage turns into a pumpkin and the coachmen into mice at midnight, having the dream is still good.

Pictured left to right are my daughter Beth's friends Brandi and Danielle, our good friend Sylvia, and Beth during a recent trip to City Park in New Orleans.

the dream of man III

the dream of man

is the dream to dream

for possibilities

and promise unseen

looking ever forward

and never back

it’s for the potential

of the attack

to rise high

going ever upward

on his daily quest

the goal to move toward

the dream of man

is the age old dream to dream

for promise and outcome

to bring together the theme.
