Homeostasis

I am thankful for homeostasis. Homeostasis is derived from the Greek words for similar and standing still. Homeostasis is when self regulation occurs as a result of checks and balances. Homeostasis is key to human life in that life requires a fine regulation of biochemical and physiological systems. Homeostasis results is normalization of these factors should they stray a little. An example is body temperature. Should the body get a little cold, adjustments occur which will bring the temperature back to normal. The opposite is true for elevated body temperature. Other systems regulated well include pH and blood levels of biochemicals such as glucose (sugar). Homeostasis is basically regulation of the status quo and an attempt to maintain it.

Using the word homeostasis in our personal relationships is taking the analogy a step further. When we get in an argument with a loved one, if we have good homeostatic mechanisms in place, we will do what is required to bring that relationship back to normal. Therefore we should try to mimic biological processes in our interactions with others.

This is a photo of the gauges and valves on a firetruck I saw in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. These guages inply the necessity for monitoring and adjustment. That is why it made me think of homeostasis.

homeostasis

my control center

flashed out a warning

weather control indicated

storm clouds were forming

chance of negative interactions

between me and you

i’ll have to intervene

and figure out what to do

homeostatic mechanisms

turn to me and say

you’ve got to take counter measures

somehow and some way

so i put my tail between my legs

and walk up to you

tell you it was all my fault

that i love you true

a little patching and kissing up

that homeostasis requires

it beats the alternative

that a relationship expires.
