Woodworking

November 11woodworking,library,bookshelves

I am thankful for woodworking. It is a mild hobby of mine. I have always enjoyed constructing things from wood. When I was in college I made a record/stereo cabinet. I have also built wood fences for my house. I have always wanted to make picture frames and hope to do that one of these day. I am not saying I am any good at it but I enjoy cutting, nailing, and nailing or screwing wood together to make something.

Anne and Hawley Wolfe, my church's minister and his wife and good friends, recently bought a house near City Park in Baton Rouge. Hawley wanted to make one of the bedrooms into his library. But there were no bookshelves. I was most happy to help them build some. After finding some good plans for the use of plywood, Anne and I got busy planning, measuring, calculating, cutting, gluing, and attaching boards together with screws. While I cut the wood, Anne glued and attached the pieces together with screws. The plan calls for vertical frames with dividers for each shelf. When the frames were made, we rasied them and attached them to the walls.  All that is left is to cut the majority of the shelves and attach them. Later down the road Anne and Hawley have the option of adding decorative wood moulding or borders. All in all, it was a fun project and we got a product we can be proud of.  And it feels good to do something for friends.

hawley’s library

life is a library

with books on shelves

that educate and inform

and entertain ourselves

the librarian arranges

and catalogs them therein

so that we may read them

and use them ourselves within

to create our own stories

from the fuel and the fire

to tell others of the good news

and to teach them and inspire.
