Cathedrals

May 30

I am thankful for cathedrals. Besides being imposing and majestic structures, they are places for the worship of God. And that cannot be a bad thing. This magnificent structure is a stately New Orleans landmark. It speaks of New Orleanians' French ancestry and the importance of religion to her people.

This is a different view of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. I took it using my normal lens set at its widest angle, getting up very close, and shooting upward. I converted the original color photo to black and white with deep blacks to enhance the magnificance of the cathedral. The official name of the cathedral is The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France. It is the oldest continuously used catholic church in the US. Several churches have stood on the grounds, dating back to 1718. The third version was built in 1789. In 1818 the clock and bells were installed. The church was rebuilt again in 1850. It stands between the Cabilido and the Presbytere facing Jackson Square and the Mississippi Rive,r welcoming all visitors and residents alike.

cathedral

this world is a cathedral

formed by our benevolent maker’s hands

the mountains are majestic alters

the sacraments the oceans and the sands

the trees stand straight and tall

their branches cross the main

where sacrifice was offered up

with the bleeding and pain

and we worship in the cathedral

as we sit on sometimes fragile earthen pews

forever in our wonderment

venerate skyward from sanctuaried views.
